Further information

Karl Hagan is a very talented emerging painter. He creates unique pieces exploring and subtly evoking or hinting atrocities caused by conflicts and the use of dangerous weapons. In his most recent works, he has focussed on creating unique figures or large-scale compositions often inspired by the great masters of the past. About this painting: 'This painting started with the idea of working with the figure as the focus in the work following a trip to Madrid where I saw paintings by Velasquez, Rubens and Goya. Rubens’ use of sketches and sculpting the figure with brush marks and flesh tones has been at the front of the ideas behind making this painting. The dog pays homage in a way to the dog in Velasquez’s Las Meninas with the colour and how the marks build up the dog.' Karl Hagan

Work part of the exhibition ‘Gallery 545 – Contemporary Art of Northern Ireland’, at the Island Arts Centre, Lisburn, until 8 October. Visit the exhibition page
