Elham Hemmat is an award-winning graphic designer and visual artist from Iran who now lives in Belfast. She holds both a Degree in Visual Communication and a Master in Art and Design and works across different disciplines. She creates posters, sculptures and paintings focussing on social and cultural issues, and her art is often inspired by images and sculpture from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic ear and tribal art. Her works have been exhibited in many countries, and she won several awards including the first prize at the International Biennial of Theatre Poster in Rzeszow, Poland and the first prize at the Fadjr International Theatre Festival in Teheran, Iran. Her works have also been acquired for public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art in Toyama, Japan and the Museum of Human Rights in Canada. Hemmat here gives an insight into her practice: ‘What drew me to the art field and grew my passion for it, is the language of art, a language that has no border or limitation, encompassing the world. For me, art is a means to highlight the world’s issues and problems and take a step for solving them and changing views for achieving a tranquil planet’.
