Wilhelmina Peace's commentary about this work
This piece emerged from a visual novel I have been developing since 2019. The book is a semi-autobiographical fairy tale infused with surreal sensibilities. Throughout the work, I explore the House as a metaphor for the Self. In this image, I explored the living room as a psychological space, reflecting on gossip, secrecy, and the fragile boundaries between intimacy and exclusion.
Influenced by my studies in anthropology, I became interested in how gossip can both bind communities together and cast others out, thus shaping notions of otherness within the collective imagination. The two women are suspended in an intimate exchange; perhaps sharing a secret, perhaps trading gossip. Positioned closely together, their bodies obscured by billowing hair, they begin to merge into a single amorphous form, bound together by their shared knowledge.
