About this work: ‘I am in my friend's kitchen on the Ards Peninsula looking out towards Knockinelder bay and the sea beyond. She tells me about her journey back to Northern Ireland, having been away for 40 years. Like me, when she left, she didn’t expect to return. As she shares her story, I sketch the view. We are open to the unexpected adventure we are on and share in our disbelief at the beauty of where we find ourselves and the stark contrast this makes to our previous urban existence. Knockinelder is the latest in my series of circular canvasses, as I settle into my new life in County Down I am meeting more people who have returned to this island and I am fascinated by their stories. It is almost as though the land is calling us back..' Sarah McWilliams

Sarah McWilliams is a multidisciplinary artist. After living and working in England for many years, she lately relocated in Northern Ireland, her ‘home’, and started exhibiting her work in the region. Her recent series of painted landscapes are informed from photos and collages created in response to a particular place and then digitally manipulated. The concept behind this process continues to reflect the power of art to transform the debris of modern life, whilst also reflecting the relationship between person and place.
