Artist's commentary about this work: 'Working through a personal archive of gathered historical photographs some images speak more than the others. Looking at serene landscapes with major tanks and military going through peaceful landscapes often feels surreal to me. How can peace and death coincide together? How can nurturing land and man-made weapons coexist continuously, without a break?'
Justė Bernotaitė is an award-winning emerging artist whose work explores how the past leaves its imprint on the landscape. She is particularly drawn to the landscapes of her homeland Lithuania - its forests, rivers, and ruins. Rather than viewing these as passive environments, she sees them as active carriers of complex histories, ancestral knowledge, ancient folklore, and personal memories.
