Artist's commentary about this work: 'Where sorrow has seeped into the ground, lilies grow silently. They serve as witnesses to those who vanished in front of us, including troops, civilians, and anonymous bodies that have returned to the earth. Flowers turn into offerings, acts of commemoration for lives cut short by violence and the never-ending recurrence of history. They are delicate but tenacious, emerging from both soil and quiet. Even when we choose not to, nature remembers. Beneath beauty is grief, and beneath mourning lies the unsettling awareness that the earth we walk on contains remnants of innumerable lives that have been forgotten. Yet within their return each season lies a quiet insistence on continuation - a reminder that life persists, and that even after devastation, something tender still reaches toward light.' Justė Bernotaitė
Justė Bernotaitė is an award-winning emerging artist whose work explores how the past leaves its imprint on the landscape. She is particularly drawn to the landscapes of her homeland Lithuania - its forests, rivers, and ruins. Rather than viewing these as passive environments, she sees them as active carriers of complex histories, ancestral knowledge, ancient folklore, and personal memories.
